History.... A calabash is a gourd found throughout Africa. Some calabashes are undecorated and others are elaborately designed with burning, inlaying, engraving, painting or carving. For the most part, the calabash is a container, a receptacle for something.

As a storage container for water or peanut oil, or a bottle for shaking cream into butter, a dipper at the well, a basin for washing, or as a dish for eating - the calabash is a highly prized lightweight container. It can also be used as a musical instrument.
