History.... In many African customs and traditions, alcohol plays an important role. All significant life events and cycles of nature are celebrated with communal drinks. It is used to settle disputes, local economic exchanges, rites such as birth, puberty, marriage, and death. The perceived presence of gods, ancestors, and spirits are involved with alcohol.
In all Ghanaian communities, a visitor is first given a seat, and then water to drink before he is greeted and asked the purpose of his visit. The smile on their face seems to be permanently in place and the world has observed that Ghanaians are very patient as people, kind not only to visitors but to themselves too. Women are highly respected. A woman is given a seat first before a man. However, if water is being offered, it is the man who drinks first.
Ghana has many varieties of popular drinks. Some of these drinks are akpeteshi, made from sugar cane, nsafufuw wine, which is tapped and sapped from oil palm and raffia palm, and pito, made from millet. African beer is thick and has a porridge-like nature, which lends itself to be often thought of more as food than as drink by the local people.
